The System Prompt is a special instruction provided to the language model before the start of the conversation with the user, typically hidden from the end user. In many API implementations and customized enterprise chatbots, the System Prompt defines the behavior, role, restrictions, and "personality" of the AI assistant for the entire session.
For example, a company building an HR assistant on ChatGPT might use a System Prompt like: "You are an HR assistant for [Company]. Only answer questions about vacation, leave, HR procedures and company benefits. Always use a professional, friendly tone. Do not provide legal advice. If a question falls outside your scope, direct the user to the HR office."
Understanding the System Prompt matters for professionals building enterprise AI solutions: it lets you pre-configure the model's behavior in a stable way, without depending on the end user specifying the role and context every time. The standing instructions the model receives before any user message: identity, rules, tone, boundaries, output format. It outranks user messages in authority and persists across the conversation, so invariants belong here, not repeated in every message.
