Prompt scaffolding is the technique of providing the model with a partial supporting structure — a scaffold — on which to build the response, for example an already sketched outline, a format with sections to fill in, or an already started line of reasoning the model must continue, instead of letting it generate everything from scratch.

Scaffolding provides intermediate anchor points: headings already present to which the model must add content, a first sentence of each paragraph already written as a guide for tone and direction, or the first steps of a reasoning already outlined that the model must complete. The model thus works within a predefined structure instead of starting from a blank page, reducing variability in the final form.
This technique is especially useful in tasks where the output's structure matters as much as its content: writing technical documents with an expected standard format, generating code starting from an already defined function skeleton, or building long responses where guiding the organization reduces the risk of the model wandering off track.
The term is borrowed from pedagogy, where "scaffolding" denotes the temporary support given to a learner, gradually removed as autonomy grows, an image that fits well the idea of offering the model an initial framework on which to complete the work.
Il prompt scaffolding e' la tecnica di fornire al modello una struttura di supporto parziale — un'impalcatura — su cui costruire la risposta, ad esempio un indice gia' abbozzato, un formato con sezioni da completare o un ragionamento avviato che il modello deve proseguire, invece di lasciargli generare tutto da zero.
Lo scaffolding fornisce punti di ancoraggio intermedi: intestazioni gia' presenti a cui il modello deve aggiungere il contenuto, una prima frase di ogni paragrafo gia' scritta come guida di tono e direzione, oppure i primi passaggi di un ragionamento gia' delineati che il modello deve completare. Il modello lavora quindi entro una struttura predefinita invece che partendo da una pagina bianca, riducendo la variabilita' della forma finale.
Questa tecnica e' particolarmente utile in compiti dove la struttura dell'output e' importante quanto il contenuto: la scrittura di documenti tecnici con un formato standard atteso, la generazione di codice a partire da uno scheletro di funzioni gia' definito, o la costruzione di risposte lunghe dove guidare l'organizzazione riduce il rischio che il modello divaghi.
Il termine e' preso in prestito dalla pedagogia, dove lo "scaffolding" indica il supporto temporaneo fornito a chi sta imparando, che viene gradualmente rimosso man mano che l'autonomia cresce, un'immagine che si adatta bene all'idea di offrire al modello un'impalcatura iniziale su cui completare il lavoro.
