The AI Office is the body established within the European Commission to oversee the application of the EU AI Act at the Union level, with particular attention to general-purpose AI models. It is the central reference point for ensuring consistent application of the regulation across member states, each of which nonetheless retains its own national supervisory authorities for AI systems used within its territory.

Its tasks include monitoring the most advanced foundation models, assessing systemic risks associated with the most capable models, developing guidelines and codes of good practice to help companies correctly interpret regulatory obligations, and coordinating with national authorities to ensure uniform application across the Union. It also has investigative powers and can request information from providers of general-purpose models.
For companies developing foundation models or high-impact AI systems, the AI Office represents the institutional counterpart for complex or cross-border compliance issues, while for more limited applications the counterpart typically remains the competent national authority of one's own member state.
The establishment of the AI Office was provided for within the EU AI Act regulatory package as a response to the need for centralized, highly specialized supervisory capacity, modeled on other European agencies overseeing technically complex sectors, in order to avoid inconsistent interpretations of the regulation across different member states.
L'AI Office è l'organismo istituito presso la Commissione Europea con il compito di sovrintendere all'applicazione dell'EU AI Act a livello dell'Unione, con particolare attenzione ai modelli di AI per finalità generali. È il punto di riferimento centrale per garantire un'applicazione coerente del regolamento tra i diversi Stati membri, ciascuno dei quali mantiene comunque proprie autorità nazionali di vigilanza per i sistemi AI usati sul proprio territorio.
Tra i suoi compiti rientrano il monitoraggio dei modelli fondazionali più avanzati, la valutazione dei rischi sistemici associati ai modelli più potenti, l'elaborazione di linee guida e codici di buona pratica per aiutare le aziende a interpretare correttamente gli obblighi normativi, e il coordinamento con le autorità nazionali per assicurare uniformità di applicazione in tutta l'Unione. Ha inoltre poteri di indagine e può richiedere informazioni ai fornitori di modelli per finalità generali.
Per le aziende che sviluppano modelli fondazionali o sistemi AI ad alto impatto, l'AI Office rappresenta l'interlocutore istituzionale con cui confrontarsi su questioni di conformità complesse o transfrontaliere, mentre per le applicazioni più circoscritte l'interlocutore resta tipicamente l'autorità nazionale competente del proprio Stato membro.
L'istituzione dell'AI Office è stata prevista nell'ambito del pacchetto normativo dell'EU AI Act come risposta all'esigenza di una capacità di supervisione centralizzata e altamente specializzata, sul modello di altre agenzie europee che vigilano su settori tecnicamente complessi, per evitare interpretazioni disomogenee del regolamento tra i diversi paesi membri.
