The algorithmic transparency register is a public database, provided for by the EU AI Act, in which providers of high-risk AI systems and deployers that are public bodies must register essential information about their systems before market placement or putting into service, making publicly visible which high-impact AI systems are in use and by whom.
The information typically registered includes the provider's identity, a description of the system's intended purpose, the status of the conformity assessment, and, for systems used by public bodies, details on the specific context of use. The register can be consulted by citizens, researchers, journalists and other authorities, and represents a systemic transparency tool distinct from the disclosure obligations owed to the individual end user.
For companies and public bodies required to register, this entails the burden of keeping information up to date over time, especially when a system is substantially modified or withdrawn from the market, and the awareness that the existence and characteristics of their high-risk AI system become public-domain information, with related reputational implications.
The establishment of a publicly searchable register follows a principle already applied in other areas of European digital regulation, where systemic transparency, achieved by making certain information publicly traceable, is considered a necessary complement to individual compliance checks, enabling diffuse social oversight beyond that exercised by authorities alone.
