High-risk AI systems (AI Act)

High-risk AI systems are a category defined by the European AI regulation to identify applications that can significantly affect people's safety or fundamental rights. This category includes, for example, systems used for recruitment, creditworthiness assessment, education, critical infrastructure management, law enforcement or as safety components of products. Classification does not depend on the technology itself but on the context and consequences of its use.

Definition

For these systems the regulation imposes strict obligations before and during market placement: risk management, data quality, technical documentation, traceability, human oversight, robustness and a conformity assessment. The aim is to allow innovation while maintaining safeguards proportionate to the potential impact on people.
