A notified body is the independent, accredited entity, formally designated by an EU member state, authorized to carry out the third-party conformity assessments required for certain categories of high-risk AI systems. To obtain this status, the body must demonstrate specific technical competence, independence from the providers it assesses, and compliance with organizational and procedural requirements set by the regulation. Once accredited, it can examine an AI system's technical documentation, conduct or oversee additional testing, and issue the conformity certificate needed to affix the CE mark to certain high-risk systems.
For companies whose systems require third-party assessment, identifying the notified body competent for their sector and planning interaction with it well in advance is a critical step on the path to commercialization: assessment timelines can be significant and must be factored into product launch planning.
The notified body system is an infrastructure already well established in European product regulation, used for decades for medical devices, machinery and other high-risk products, and has been extended to the assessment of AI systems following the same independent external verification model.

Il termine "notificato" indica proprio il fatto che lo Stato membro ha comunicato ufficialmente alla Commissione Europea e agli altri Stati membri l'esistenza e la competenza di quell'organismo, rendendolo riconosciuto in tutta l'Unione.
Per ottenere questo status, l'organismo deve dimostrare competenza tecnica specifica, indipendenza dai fornitori che valuta e rispetto di requisiti organizzativi e procedurali stabiliti dalla normativa. Una volta accreditato, può esaminare la documentazione tecnica di un sistema AI, condurre o supervisionare test aggiuntivi e rilasciare il certificato di conformità necessario per l'apposizione del marchio CE su determinati sistemi ad alto rischio.
Per le aziende i cui sistemi richiedono una valutazione di terza parte, individuare l'organismo notificato competente per il proprio settore e pianificare per tempo l'interazione con esso è un passaggio critico del percorso verso la commercializzazione: i tempi di valutazione possono essere significativi e vanno preventivati nella pianificazione del lancio del prodotto.
Il sistema degli organismi notificati è un'infrastruttura già consolidata nella regolamentazione di prodotto europea, utilizzata da decenni per dispositivi medici, macchinari e altri prodotti ad alto rischio, ed è stata estesa alla valutazione dei sistemi di intelligenza artificiale seguendo lo stesso modello di verifica esterna indipendente.
