Right to explanation

The right to explanation is the principle that a person subject to an automated decision is entitled to receive understandable information about the logic behind that decision and its consequences. In the European context, this right is linked to data protection rules governing fully automated decisions with significant effects on people, such as a loan refusal or exclusion from a selection process. The individual must be able to understand why a particular decision was made, challenge it and request human intervention.

Definition

This right is closely tied to the transparency and interpretability of AI systems: providing an adequate explanation requires the model's operation to be sufficiently understandable. It does not require disclosing proprietary technical details, but clearly communicating the main factors that determined the outcome, enabling the person to assert their rights.
